For my project, I worked with Rajesh Pratap Singh, a famous Delhi based designer. He is also known for his keen awareness of social responsibility and the promotion of eco friendly projects.
The theme of my first assignment was “Insects in their environment”. Initially, I gathered pictures of different environments around and translated them on fabric. The insects are simplified and stylized to make the form visually appealing. The outcome was a directory of ideas in terms of swatches and paper concepts.
This project had to be inclusive of all techniques so I decided to have a dictionary of pictures that can lead to developing of forms, textures, patterns, and layouts. All the swatches that come out would be a resource say a “swatch library” be it home textiles or apparel.
For my second assignment, I was interested in launching a home line for Rajesh Pratap’s store in Garden of Five Senses, Delhi. The scope involved reusing fabric or utilizing the waste generated during or after production. Rajesh Pratap Singh is known for his clean lines, bold forms and neat finishes. I had to be to be careful in using the jersey knit left over as it should not appear kitsch or shabby and ensure that his distinct style is integrated in this home collection.
The collection “New Jersey” is going to be placed in the stores in couple of months, as more products are going to be added by his design team. It was a directional time for me as there was so much learning at every step. |
