In my diploma project, I designed and developed a 12-channel low cost ECG machine in order to provide a satisfactory user experience at an affordable price especially focusing at the emerging market. My project brief was to design a low cost ECG machine in a cost effective manner with enhanced user experience.
I started my work learning various medical terminologies, process of performing ECG and understanding the evolution of the product. Simultaneously, I also carried out market research and documented the existing products available both in the domestic and international markets. Afterwards, a thorough study was taken up to understand the ECG machines developed by GE, their design, key features and usability aspects.
Direct interviews, ethnographic and qualitative research and observation based studies were also carried out including an evaluation exercise to develop “fish-bone diagram” to understand systematically what factors would contribute towards a satisfactory user experience. As secondary research, I created different scenarios around the product and studied all aspects related to it to understand what factors contribute to design experience of the users and how.
In the next phase, I assessed the design objectives and started product conceptualization. Developed ideas were shared and discussed among the team members to identify the pros and cons of each idea. Concepts were weighted against various parameters to arrive at the final solution, which was taken to the next level of detail. At this stage, attention was paid to the user interface, design and engineering details. After furnishing a couple of mock-up models, final prototype was made for further evaluation and finalizing the design.
During the project work, I interacted with a lot of people with rich experience and background, discussed and shared ideas with them which opened up a new horizons for me. It has also enriched my analytical and design skills. |
