I developed the concept of an amphibious vehicle for the Indian youth of 2040 in my diploma project, which can perform both on water and land and also transform with ease in the two environments. It was designed with the intent to fulfill the dream of future mobility of the Indian youth in 2040. Being a vehicle meant for the youth, I tried to develop one that I could imagine as my own, both as a developer and a customer. I carried out primary research to understand the infrastructure and user context in the broader sense. My secondary research was more detailed in nature and looked into specific aspects which were more closely connected with the design, aesthetics, operating environment, technology and materials used in the vehicle. I also conducted a questionnaire based survey on the present day youth to get a better understanding of target users’ profile, their lifestyle and usage patterns. Through trend research, I started visualizing what the paradigm shift could be in the year 2040 in terms of scenarios, user preferences and emerging technologies and materials. I developed a mood board and started exploring concepts of land and water-centric vehicles, propulsions, seating layouts and chassis. Few concepts were selected for further refinement and detailing of the interior design and overall vehicle structure.
My diploma project allowed me to grow as a designer professionally. It improved my thought process, analytical approach and visualization skills. I also learnt how to deal with other colleagues so as to manage time and delegate work to others. |
