My diploma project was to design a set of door handle based on the present trend for the Scandinavian market. The project demanded designing the new range of lever sets and matching accessories different from the conventional ones. I started my work with a study of trend analysis in the present market and also studying materials, finishes and processes currently used in manufacturing. Next step was studying the present market and the kind of look and finishes people look for and to understand the need of ‘Universal Design’ in their lives.
I used ‘Affinity Diagram’ to organize and group large amounts of data related to ideas, opinions, and issues. It helped me group ideas generated during brainstorming session and made me understand the design aspects of a handle. The mood boards developed for Finland, Norway, Denmark and Sweden gave me an overview of what kind of design people like in these countries. Besides that, it also helped me define the Scandinavian design based on which I started developing my design concepts. Anthropometric data required to design the handle was also taken into account to make it comfortable, user friendly and more productive.
It was good experience to study Scandinavian designs which are the epitome of modern design and to learn about their pioneers of design. It was also a wonderful learning experience for me - to know the world outside and learn the process and methods used in their design industries. |
