My diploma project brief was to design an assembly for the existing technology for Liquid Chromatography System for the Indian market keeping in mind its function, user interface and materials, usability and aesthetics. My design was based on the information received from the users and study of the existing technology.
I started my work with the understanding of the domain - chemistry and working principles of liquid chromatography besides the product lifecycle and its positioning on micro and macro levels. Simultaneously, I also studied similar existing technologies and products available in the market for conducting chromatography.
After visiting biotech firms, institutes and research laboratories, I started talking to the users using the system. Broadly the users were divided into four categories namely the research and development scientist, startup biotech firm owner, professor and student. In the next step I made in-depth study of all the design parameters and the factors influencing design such as ease of cleaning, storage of accessories, maintenance, assembly, etc. Alternative designs were conceptualized keeping in mind enhanced usability, user interface and appearance. Working in a corporate set up, where the design studio works hand in hand with the engineering team and the business team, widened my outlook. It was not just the learning of design but many other things which I learnt in GE and which I think will help shape my future as a designer. |
