Finger vein pattern as identification proof is the security system which provides biometric key for every registered individual. My diploma project brief was to design and develop a new biometric device based on this technology with due consideration to aesthetics, form and design detailing. I started my work with market research and collecting information through web research on similar biometric identification products. Users’ feedback was collected with reference to their interaction with the products specially the ease of use and satisfaction, accessibility and problem areas, etc. A preliminary study of the existing product for activity analysis and identification of the reactions of the first time and left and right hand users was also done. Details of ergonomic considerations including anthropometric measurements required for the product were also studied. I developed several concept sketches with low, medium and high level configurations. With the help of ideation map and trade-off matrix, I selected five of them for further refinement. In the next phase, I fabricated mock-up models for initial testing with the users and based on comparative analysis and selected one of them. Then I created mood board and started form refinement. More iteration was made within the language to achieve a final form. I developed a CAD model to understand the dimensions of the product in solid works software. Next phase was rapid prototyping.
The diploma project taught me the professional approach to industrial design and also educated me regarding production process, mold making, tooling coordination and mold flow analysis. |
