My diploma project brief was design intervention for labour room medical products. The goal of my project was to understand the process of child birth, identify the problem areas in the current healthcare system for both the medical practitioner and the expectant mother. I started reading books, magazines and research articles to understand the different issues involved in women’s healthcare, the relevant issues of pregnancy and child birth. I selected one hospital for user research and spent several days there interacting with doctors, nurses, ward boys and some technicians for collecting necessary information. I visited labour ward and the labour room for understanding the whole process and recording all the activities going on there. After taking due permission from the concerned authority, I took a lot of photographs on all the relevant process for the analysis of the present scenario and for discussion with the guide. After initial research, I selected three opportunity areas for design intervention - normal delivery, caesarean section and resuscitation. I listed down all the products and carried out my studies on the selected items under surgical tools, furniture, and hospital hollow ware, drape, etc., used inside the labour room for caesarean delivery. My next step was ideation. Some selected ideas were then presented to doctors and after several discussions, three product areas were considered to be taken further. This project has taught me how to approach and interact with people as well as conduct research on sensitive issues like pregnancy and child birth. |
