In my diploma project I developed baby stroller for Mahindra Retail which was functional, sensitive to babies’ needs, exciting and easy to manufacture and transport. The product aesthetics was created to convey safety, purity, softness and other emotional aspects. My brief was to develop a range of products for Mahindra Retail to add value to their new store ‘Mom and me’ considering their manufacturing team, users and market attributes. The target group was upper middle and the high income group which looked for added values and style over basic functions.
I started my initial research with the understanding of baby care which helped me in designing stroller and to design other range of products. In this phase, I collected information on the risks involved in handling the new born babies including their growth patterns, health, habits and proper materials for them. Needs of the children from the new born to pre-schooling stage were also studied. I interviewed parents, doctors, baby sitters and baby product sellers to know all the relevant information. Interviews were followed by discussions with the parents to evaluate the information and develop the design directions. Later, I concentrated on designing the baby stroller as I found great potential for design intervention in terms of mechanism and styling. This journey from research to a final product helped me realize my strengths and weaknesses as well and gave me the confidence and equipped me to enter the professional world of design. |
