Kido Enterprise works on products revolving around the current educational context,
specialising in toys, furniture and tools to promote new and interactive means of
education. My diploma project focused on developing interactive educational toys and
furniture for preschool children. Initially, the project required an understanding of the
activities that happen in preschool and identify the issues related to them. A study
of various schools and hobby classes in the city was done. Existing toys, furniture,
and layouts in a preschool were also studied. Based on this study, a design language
was evolved for the toys and furniture. Further, a mood board was developed which
conveyed the kind of experience the toy or furniture had to offer, the design language,
the colour palette, and the materials. The design directions emerged from the mood
board. Thereafter, an overall conceptual theme was developed based on the design
directions. On the basis of this theme and layout suggestion, concepts for the toy or
furniture were developed. Simultaneously, various materials were looked at and different
forms were explored. A few concepts were selected in consultation with the client
and the mock up models were made. Ergonomic concerns pertaining to the concepts
developed were revisited.
Finally, prototypes of the two final concepts based on language learning were made—
Story Box and Make Sentences were made. User testing was conducted and the
feedbacks incorporated in the final prototype. |
