I did my diploma project with Asian Heritage Foundation (AHF) which is an NGO like
organization involved in the upliftment of the dying traditions of India. I worked on
the designing of toys under the ‘JIYO TOY’ program. I had to develop a new form
of toy for the commonly known “Etikoppaka wood toys” made in Andhra Pradesh.
During my diploma project I participated in research, conceptualisation, product
making and training of the craftsmen at the cluster. This cluster, identified by AHF at
Etikoppaka, was owned by a local entrepreneur named C V Raju. He is known for his
use of eco-friendly vegetable dyes that he applied as colour on the wooden toys which
he produced. The new toys which I designed were based on a concept taken from the
British automated toys made of wood where the model displays kinetic movement. The
application of this particular concept was suggested by Rajeeve Sethi, the head of AHF,
who on a tour to Britain came across kinetic products and decided that this element of
kinetic movement was artistically suitable for the wooden toys of Etikoppaka.
