Science Educational Toys Using Channapatna Craft

Turned lacware toys and products are characteristics of the Channapatna crafts.
My diploma project focused on the idea of examining possibilities of creating toys to aid
learning science subjects in secondary schools using Channapatna crafts.
The project brief was to make toys that would help students ‘play and learn’
fundamentals of Physics that are taught in class. It would be an adjunct to class room
learning based on the topics in the curriculum. The physics topics to be taught from
classes 6–8 were compiled and explored. The toys that could be developed from these
concepts were developed, and rough prototypes were made and listed. The successful
prototypes were taken for a user testing with children and they gave very insightful
feedbacks on the toys. Based on the feedbacks received and the production process in
Channapatna, the toys to be developed were selected. Various design possibilities were
tried in solid works and the final designs were selected. Minimal colours using a two
shaded spectrum would be used. The combination of dark green and the plain lac was
finalised upon after a few trials. The final designs were based on the ease of production,
look of the product, and children’s preference. |
