My diploma project brief was to design glass furniture and lifestyle accessories to cater to the luxury segment. I was given three keywords - illusion, reflection and multi-reflection for developing products in sync with the design language of ‘Wrap Art and Design’ which seamlessly blended smart contemporary styling with form and inspiration from the rich Indian culture. The unfolding of various insights about the users from the socio-cultural aspects and analysis on the existing interior trend gave me proper design directions. I began by gathering information on company’s profile. Then I focused my research on the target group - their lifestyle, activity zones, interiors, aspiration etc. The subsequent step was to broadly understand Indian material culture and its innumerable dimensions. In the process I also studied “Firozabad glass craft” as a part of Indian craft tradition. Eventually, I began design explorations and developed concepts of several products. The products were also evaluated ergonomically. To get a clearer picture about the overall look, size, form and design, small thermocol models of the product were made.
This project gave me the opportunity to educate myself and improve my knowledge about working in a studio setup, sticking to project guidelines and learning the real life project constraints. The most important learning was the need to be organized and set one’s own deadlines to meet that of the company’s and as a designer to be able to communicate ideas and present them effectively. |
