My diploma project brief was to design lights with silver and any other given mixed media for the higher income group to establish the design language of the company Frazer and Haws. I had both the opportunity and constraint in terms of the use of material as the company’s requirement was to work with sterling silver while my specialization required me to work in ceramic or glass. I started my work with the study of the company’s manufacturing process to understand the assembly line production and comprehend the design language. Simultaneously, I also started collecting information from published materials and internet on different types of lighting, history of lamps, the existing range of products etc. It was followed by market survey to understand the latest trends, materials incorporated and the profile of the competitors. A questionnaire based survey was also conducted to understand the user’s aspirations, preferred combination of materials and other preferences like patterns, colors, and textures, etc. Thereafter, I created a theme board which led to the generation design ideas and concepts. A combination of flame work and lathe work in glass were used in prototyping the final concepts which were further embellished with silver using techniques of chasing, engraving, jali and casting. On the whole, it was a great learning experience where I learnt to work under constraints and be prepared for surprising challenges which come one’s way at any stage. |
