My diploma project was to develop a collaborative learning process between the designer and the artisans of Kerala to act as a catalyst at all levels of craft development and to encourage them to participate in the process of design innovation. The main emphasis was given on exposing them to the latest developments in the craft sector in the wake of new technology, market needs and consumer demand. My first step was to spend sufficient time with the artisans to understand their work, their strengths and weaknesses and to deal with the individuals accordingly. The project was divided into three phases. In the first phase, I conducted a warm up session for two months in which the craftsperson carried out several form explorations combining aesthetics with utility.
The process began with observing and collecting objects from nature and then drawing. The intention was to make the artisans observe the forms in nature. This was followed by a seven day visit to Bengaluru to make the artisans understand the urban lifestyle and meet the buyers in the city to get feedback on their work. Next phase was reworking on our designs based on the feedback received. The third phase was my explorations for a tableware range based on my understanding of the cluster. Artisans had a very strong sense of material and I learnt from them how clay and some other materials behave in a certain stage and accordingly how to handle and use them. |
