In my diploma project, I developed an open rim floor mounted European Water Closet (EWC) and a table top wash basin for the mid market segment and named the suite “Grazia”. Both were designed considering ergonomic aspects to make them user friendly and to have smoother, simple and elegant form with minimum grooves and optimum curves.
I visited different sanitaryware outlets to understand the current market trends and interacted with user in various places including Delhi, Gujarat, and Maharashtra. I framed the questionnaire in such a way that the feedback could play a significant role in redefining, focusing and exploring the design brief. Ergonomics of WC and wash basin was taken into consideration and basic Indian anthropometric data were also studied and analysed for this project.
Based on the above studies, first a “theme board” and then three form languages were developed namely Yoga and Serenity, Energy and Movement and Designing with Novelty. Various concepts were developed through sketches. Selected concepts were explored further out of which few were transferred to scale down thermocol mock-up models for checking the shape, form and some of the functional aspects. Thereafter, 3D Rhino models were developed for finalising the forms as well as to understand its technical details.
Based on the technical drawings of both the final products POP models were made followed by mould making and casting. Final fired products were tested for quality assurance. Defects were identified and corrected to acquire the final finished product ready for production.
This project helped me become more independent and to rediscover my strengths and weaknesses as a designer. Tackling different ambiguities in decision making and finalising the same has inculcated in me the flexibility and ability to convince. |
