Lighting can dramatically enhance the ambience of a room and make it look warm, inviting, cozy and comfortable. My diploma project was to design decorative ambient lighting using glass and metal for home collection for the higher income group clients and meant for residential purpose, personal use and gift item.
After understanding the company profile and its design brief, I started acquainting myself with the production methods, people and their working pattern, materials used as well as their sources. My observations were divided mainly in four parts to take the best out of them for design concepts. The first part was description of resources which included the information about in-house and outsourced production methods and materials. Second part was a study of the ongoing and forecasted trends for lighting design. Last two parts were the study of users, the market and competitors of the company. To come up with user friendly lighting solutions, a small survey was conducted among the existing users, industrial and interior designers and architects. A questionnaire was prepared with material options to get the initial idea to start design. After brainstorming and developing initial concepts, I started my explorations on 19 gauge brass sheet. Two main properties of metal and glass - reflection and refraction were considered while exploring desired lighting effects. The whole exercise was a good learning experience for me which helped me understand the way lighting industry works. |
