Alo : LED Luminary Design
‘Alo’ means light in Bengali. The objective was to design an unconventional lighting fixture with an effective blend of appeal and function. Based on early surveys in the lighting market, it was found that pendent lights were predominantly heavy, closed boxes with a very technical aesthetic. The project aimed to produce a light that was airy and with a ‘human’ appeal.
Parallel research was conducted in consumer electronics, furniture, and new materials. The keywords that informed the design language were ‘sensual,’ ‘harmonic,’ ‘airy,’ ‘friendly,’ ‘iconic’ and ‘human.’ Studies were made on the dimensions of vision, considerations of lighting, aesthetic evaluations, performance considerations, operational considerations, social issues and health considerations.
Aluminium was chosen for its cooling properties, strength and malleability. The challenge was to combine innovation with sustainable design, and to apply new technologies to the final design. Despite varied constraints, a beautiful piece finally emerged through a carefully structured design process.
