In today’s world with companies operating in a global business environment, Business to Business (B2B) integration is a pre-requisite for them to remain competitive. They need to interact with their suppliers, partners, and customers distributed throughout the world. B2B integration allows trading partners to exchange business documents electronically, including purchase orders and acknowledgments, shipping confirmations, invoices or financial transactions.
In the current B2B integration of services or products, creating a B2B integration setup for even one partner or bringing on-board a single trading partner can take two to three months. This tedious integration processes and requirements of various support and maintenance for the software is a major hindrance in today’s dynamic B2B integration, especially for the Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs).
My diploma project thus looked into the process of rethinking B2B interaction paradigm.
Microsoft BizTalk server is designed to connect incompatible systems, manage business processes and exchange documents between disparate applications within or across organizational boundaries. The current B2B integration system and partner management in BizTalk feels like a collection of random tools, rather than a toolbox with a cohesive logic underpinning its organization.
The objective of my project was to rethink the B2B interaction paradigm and visualize a new trading partner management experience for the future. Latest technologies such as cloud, web 2.0 were studied to identify a suitable platform. An iterative user-centered design process and a system design approach were followed to achieve the identified user and business goals. The outcome was a cloud based web portal for B2B interaction consisting of three main components- trading partner community, B2B integration management and a monitoring and tracking module. The project was a good learning experience for me.
