My diploma project was about facilitating communication of information via mobile phones in the user’s local Indian language script. The mobile phone technology today displays dominance of English language. In India, people have adopted English as a formal language of communication and have become multilingual. But this is a typical urban syndrome. In the tier 2, tier 3 cities and villages local vernacular language is primarily used for day-to-day communication. The mobile telephony catering to diverse user base has opened design opportunities for novel interfaces and interactions that could overcome the language barriers and improve the usability of the device for the user.
The project looked at text entry methods that can cater users to communicate using native language. It accommodated the requirements of the diverse Indian scripts so as to enhance the phone usage for wider purpose than just to make and receive calls. The primary focus was on developing the Indic script input for mobile phone devices. The language for the study chosen was Marathi which is written in Devnagari script.
The design challenge was to accommodate large set of vowels and consonants within the limited input interactions. For Indic scripts writing and representation is different for vowel and consonant and there is need for independent interactions for both. The proposed concept is about mapping modifiers spatially rather that providing a fixed space interaction. The core concept is to separate vowel and consonant interaction logically as well as spatially. It was a good learning experience for me. |
