My diploma project brief was to design an affordable mobility for the new generation
Indian in 2015. My goal was to come up with some vehicle which is unique and
unconventional yet functional and very practical. I started my work with brainstorming
and simultaneously reading books, magazines and research articles on the relevant
topics. Then I conducted questionnaire based study to understand the users, their
aspiration and motivation factors behind buying a new car. I travelled different places
in Ahmedabad to observe and study users’ behaviour pattern. I started the initial
explorations on the overall volume based on my inspiration from ‘Shankha’ as it is the
symbol of protection and longevity. During concept development, I tried different seating
layouts and identified the locations of battery and power plant for its easy access and
package. Thereafter, I created reference drawing taking the earlier concept forward
for more refinement. After the design features were finalized emphasis was given on
interesting styling cues and I started explorations to refine surfaces and proportions to
make the side view dynamic. After the finalization of concept and renderings, I made
the orthographic views in 1:4 scale. Final clay model was developed and then FRP (Fiber
Reinforced Plastic) was casted on it to get a light weight model with better surface finish.
My involvement in this project has taught me, how to work towards the vision of the
company to get a good outcome without compromising one’s initial concepts. |
