The brief of my diploma project was to design a small car considering the future source
of energy. The aim of my project was to discover what the Indian design language is
and how it can be taken a step forward in evolving and incorporating it into the Hyundai
Design Language. I also tried to propose a vehicle form that breaks the convention
and at least makes an effort towards creating a small energy efficient vehicle. My first
step was to understand the design philosophy of Hyundai. I carried out my research
and groundwork into three different areas: i) Indian art, culture and architecture to
study how small spaces and volumes are dealt with ii) small cars and travel pattern of
users in different cities of India and the latest developments in the field of energy and
vehicle packaging and iii) learning the new generation users. All these aspects ultimately
focused my attention towards the vehicle architecture and recent advancements in the
battery technology. I started developing concepts initially in three areas – ‘exterior
becomes interiors’, ‘feel the energy’ and ‘variable seating position’. My next step was
refining the selected ideas into one resolved concept. Once the concept was frozen and
renders were done, the orthographic views were made in 1:4 scale. Attention to details,
pushing oneself harder to achieve the desired results and sensitivity towards form and
shape were some of the things that I learnt in this diploma project. |
