The brief of my diploma project was to design a fun-to-drive compact SUV for India
2015. My aim was to create a compact SUV with unique surface language, volume and
features mainly inspired from the Indian culture and present user scenario. To start with,
I studied the design philosophy of Hyundai Motors and their new concept called ‘fluidic
sculpture’ which is going to be the base for vehicles to come. I also started initial
research on their existing and line up vehicles, interiors as well as SUV and ‘Compact
SUV’ concept cars to get a general idea of the form language and key features used by
the company to make it distinct in the market. Since the project was focused on styling
and fun-to-drive experience as the core elements, the methods I used in to know the
users were the interaction through informal discussion, interviews and observation;
while other elements were researched from scholarly documents and books. The final
result of the analysis was taken foreword as a keyword for the next level of research
and also for developing mood board depicting with the approach of interesting details
complementing the overall volume. My next steps were design explorations, concept
generation and refining the selected ideas into one resolved concept. Thereafter, I made
a 1:4 scale clay model exterior and alias 3-D model interior. For me, clay modelling was
a major breakthrough in the whole design process to know the proportions and to get
the appropriate surface quality. |
