My diploma project brief was to design a scooter with 90 cc engine for the school and
college going male students in the age group 16 to 18 years and mainly for the metro
cities of India. The new design had to be functional and aesthetically appealing. I started
collecting information from magazines, encyclopedia and internet to know as much as
possible about scooters, current trends and models available and also did an assignment
of scooter-fusion to get familiarized with the forms, components and key points in the
design and styling of a scooter. At the next step, I studied Indian automobile industry
and two-wheeler market and tried to identify issues like changes in infrastructure,
current trends in rural and urban regions, and demand of scooters and mopeds as well
as their overall production. I visited schools, colleges, play grounds etc., and spent time
with the target users to get to know their background, needs and lifestyles; their tastes,
etc. I narrowed down my approach at entertainment and finalized the theme ‘SCI- FI’
based on science fiction movies. After initial ideation mapping, inspiration sketches and
study of futuristic forms, my next step was to conceptualize, explore, and do styling,
design detailing for the concept “Pegasus”. This project taught me that as a designer
I not only need to analyze and foresee how the users are likely to use the product or
behave in a given situation, but also the need to test the validity of one’s assumptions. |
