Sheer curiosity as to what a company specializing in cycles had to offer on the sartorial front initially drew me to this project. Further investigation revealed that the proposition was to design lifestyle sportswear for 18-30 year olds in urban India in support of the company’s foray into the global fitness market. The venture was in its nascent stage and offered the perfect opportunity to apply my design training in branding, retailing, garment manufacturing and supply chain management.
My design process comprised research and analysis of the sponsor, users, the market and sportswear ranges. I then conceptualized designs. The final stage involved planning, sourcing, sampling and the photo shoot.
I conceptualized three collections: Active, Reactive and Proactive all under the umbrella of the name BSA Active. Two of these –Active [which targets an older, more sober group] and Reactive [for younger, more fashionable users] were taken further. One collection each was done for these lines for the Autumn Winter 2009 season. ‘20 MILES HIGH’ was the Active Line and ‘LOUD MOUTH’ was the Reactive Line for AW ’09. The new brand that I designed seamlessly fit in with the company’s current product portfolio and brand image. Yet, it also exudes a distinct identity from other sportswear brands.
This project was a stellar opportunity. My most important learning is that that every concept calls for some level of the impossible. If one aspires towards it, then by the time it trickles down various levels of reality checks to gain its final shape, it still stays way higher than the mundane. |
