Chikankaari is an ancient form of floral embroidery which is intricately worked with needle and raw thread. This art has its heritage in the city of Lucknow in Uttar Pradesh.
For my project I had the privilege of working on two assignments.
For my first assignment, I designed collection ranges for the brand Fab India Ltd. catering to their subcategories of women’s wear: ethnic, western, girls, teens and their accessories sections for the Spring/Summer 09 season. This project presented me with the opportunity to understand the domestic market of the Chikankaari art. I also acquired exposure to how an embroidery art form is perceived in a retail market set-up.
My second assignment was to plan a collection of home furnishing items in Chikankaari to be displayed at Heimtextil, Germany 2009. I also had the opportunity to plan the stall display at the Germany fair premises. This assignment gave me an insight into the export market of Chikankaari made-ups and an opportunity to interpret international buyers’ requirements for a heritage embroidery art form.
Working with a team, this very compact set-up gave me exposure in all stages of product development right from range plan to final production. I learnt how to communicate with different buyers and suppliers as well as the different ‘languages’ of various levels of people and artisans. The concept of designing to fit the look of particular brands was an intriguing one.
Working in a smaller scale industry gave me a big-picture view from both a designer’s point of view as well as an entrepreneur’s view. |
