My project was completed in Paul Salon, an export company created by the designer Satya Paul, to market his creations globally. The overarching objective catered towards understanding design in relation to nature and evolving into a higher spiritual being through one’s work.
My brief was to understand design in context to human life, observing and understanding the dynamics of nature. Home furnishings, my focal area, was understood by closely observing the different mediums used to express and decorate a living space across the world.
The initial phase of research included self contemplation to understand self. Then, I studied surface ornamentation. Subsequently, I analyzed the organization in terms of its vision, design philosophy, identity, its market position, infrastructure and working environment.
I developed four attractive patterns- ‘The Tree of Life’, a textural design pattern; ‘Chinese Lattice Work; (for various home furnishing products and fabric development for apparel); ‘Pebbles’ – a range of floor rugs and floor cushions inspired by pebbles found on sea beds; and ‘Coiling’ – a range of innovative cushions developed through utilizing Chinese lattice work patterns for surface texturing and ornamentation.
I also incorporated form development, ergonomics and function. Exploration with different embroidery techniques, surface embellishment, colors and molded form was a key highlight. I was not creating something that is catering to pre-existing specified consumer demand, but rather, something that the consumer would inevitably ‘want’ to possess on presentation.
This project helped enrich my design vocabulary. I also developed a deep spiritual relation to God and became more aware of my oneness with nature. |
