My project is an endeavor to create a fusion between two different Indian zones. I designed a collection based on Banaras cutwork craft for Cochin women on the basis of fashion forecasts of colors and trends for Spring-Summer 2010. I wanted to establish value and respect for the craft culture of Banaras cutwork.
My intent was to create trendy and fresh designs for South Indian college girls. My research showed that they wanted to look good but could not wear Westernized dresses because of family and socio-cultural restrictions. So they were leaning more towards Indo-Western fusion wear.
My methodology involved intensive research on the craft of the Cutwork of Banaras, field trips to Varanasi, market research on Kochi, global trend analysis, consumer adaptation processes and forecast studies in apparel planning and scheduling as well as color forecasting.
This culminated in a final collection of ten designs with varying looks, styles and motifs that are in sync with Indian tradition and are simultaneously comfortable, trendy, elegant and feminine. They are not restricted to the usual definition of ‘Kurti and Denims’ that is indicative of current Indo-Western fusion trends. The inspirations for my motifs were CORAL as well as Indian and Oriental floral patterns.
My project has helped me acquire experience in market research, fashion forecasting and fusion mix. I reached a new level of creativity. My key learning is how design is a vital tool in directing the path of both artisans and people associated in the design process. |
