Through my project, I wanted to explore typography in relation to culture and literacy. I designed an Ol Chiki typeface, which will primarily not only be used in print but also on the web. The family was designed in one weight variation, namely ‘regular’ with other weight proposals for the future. The objective was to design and promote Ol Chiki as the original script of the Santhali language. At present, there are four different scripts being used to write Santhali – and many of these scripts are inadequate in writing the language.
The Santhali language falls in the category of Austro-Asiatic language group.
The design process comprised 6 phases : Collecting Ol chiki and Santhali related material; Looking into the revival and reuse of Hebrew as a language and a base for culture; Working with kitta, getting a basic understanding of form and the strokes and deciding the characters for the font, refining characters and defining first key glyphs; Talking to people in Jharkand , collecting information about Santhali culture, tradition, folktales, religion; Character design and Refining and finalizing the character set.
My project has given me a wider perspective in learning how language and scripts can be revived. I am very pleased at the opportunity to meet people who are actively involved in bigger social causes and who take more social responsibility than me. The best gift that this project has provided me with is the opportunity to learn a lot of things about my own culture. |
