For my project, I developed new conceptual models for an airplane flight deck of the future, exploring the many possibilities presented by new technologies . This was an exciting opportunity to acquire experience in a new area which I had no exposure in.
As a graphic designer, I was able to contribute a unique perspective to this venture compared to the perspective a product designer might offer. Vision is the most important sense in providing information to a pilot for maintaining a safe flight. Spatial disorientation is a major cause of air crashes. A bias towards visual aspects is evident from the time and effort I invested in the selection/creation of fonts, colors and symbols that have been used in the touch screens, the main display panel, and control panels.
The design process was divided into four phases –data planning; developing an information hierarchy; developing graphics and developing prototypes. I also studied air traffic, terrains, navigational aids and developed screen fonts for cockpit displays to aid a flight crew in understanding information on hazards such as weather, terrain and traffic effortlessly. I created urgency hierarchies and designed new color configurations to ensure that saturated colors are used with extreme care in the display panel. The objective is to ensure that the pilot maintains accurate mental models of his environment.
While the academic focus of my project was graphic design, I derive tremendous satisfaction in the fact that I have been instrumental in addressing human factors pertinent to flight deck design. |
