My project had two major deliverables which were poster design and a coffee table book for the promotion of a Hindi feature film called ‘ Gulaal ‘ produced and directed by Anurag Kashyap. The film is about student politics and the blindness of provincialism.
My research process involved studying propaganda, Indian imagery and Film imagery. After intensive ideation I settled on two concepts –
1. Dualism (based on propaganda)
2. Kings and Queens (based on reviving the princely state of Rajputana)
My objective was to create a graphic language, packaging graphics and collaterals. I generated final posters, display posters and lobby cards and designed a suggested extension of the website. This was the first time that I was doing a full film promotional package. The challenge lies in keeping in mind various media and having a uniform language across. The coffee table book was designed after the film’s release for niche-cine goers and audiences at international film festivals. The process consisted of concept exploration and designing the book: its grids, typography , layout and images and working out printing costs
Since the marketing campaign was already finalized, I was disappointed that my poster designs could not be incorporated. However, I still learned a lot. It was insightful to see the role played by graphic design in the film industry. The film industry has embraced the new media. As a graphic designer it becomes necessary to be able to work across platforms. I was infused with positive creative energy throughout the process. |
