Children’s fiction in India is a rich nascent but relatively unexplored area, offering immense possibilities for research, creativity and innovation in storytelling.
For my project, I designed both a simultaneous print and online edition of a children’s publication.
The book relates to conservation and protection of biodiversity and wildlife in India. The animals in this book have unique personalities. Many urban people and children in India may never have seen wild animals aside of visits to the zoo. In this project, I have tried to get intimate with wildlife – a kingdom of vultures, frogs, hornbills, and big cats. This project gave me a unique opportunity to create several elements of nature in my illustrations.
I created the online version using a contemporary internet based tool ‘blogging. The blog, titled ‘Animal Writes’ has a look and feel that is minimalist yet dynamic and is interactive in nature. Readers can view and make remarks or comments in each blog. The publication falls under the genre of fiction for 8+ to young adults as well as adults who are wildlife enthusiasts. This will be the first time that a children’s publication will run in both print and web in India
My project provided an exciting birds-eye view to the process and the practices of the market and insights into an industry in transition. Traditional graphic design skills such as book layouts and illustration are now being combined with other disciplines through digital media. The result is new design vocabularies and inventive new ways to communicate with audiences around the world. |
