This diploma project was undertaken with the sponsorship of an architecture firm in Delhi towards the production of content for a design publication. The study attempted to gauge the changing ideas of what design means today and what relationships it has with the various other disciplines (Arts, Sciences, and Humanities) of our times.
The first phase of the study commenced with an awareness of the specific socio-cultural frameworks that produce particular ideas and philosophies of design. The second phase of the study was based on the hypothesis that in the future design may grow closer to the fields of the social sciences and that a deeper understanding into the nature of man and his environment may be essential to the growth of the discipline. The third part of this study broadens the scope of the discipline even further: it considered the design process as a basic instinct of all living things. The capacity for consciousness, awareness, planning, navigation, seeking of shelter, food and pleasure are present in diverse life-forms: the creeper, the crow and the dog are some of those whose development has been observed to better grasp the very fundamental nature and premise of the design process. Much remains undiscovered and unseen about this magnificent discipline, and towards the end of the exercise certain directives and suggestions were offered in order to keep this process of inquiry alive. |
