The objective of my project was to study the properties of Stainless Steel 430 and analyze the potential of using the material in new ways in India’s fast growing retail sector.
My design process spanned two phases:
The first catered to the functional aspect, wherein I focused on material, fixtures and joineries which were to be built into the outlet. I conceptualized the design and detailing of wall fixtures, island displays and modular components. I also explored modularity in terms of stacking/hanging and the compatibility of Stainless Steel 430 with other materials such as corian and glass.
The second phase related to aesthetic aspects of the outlets and centered around displays, branding and finishes. I was excited about Stainless Steel as an aesthetic element given the versatility of all possible finishes and diverse textures that can be given to the material.
I then designed concepts and textures specific to a brand that would make it stand out in a SHOP IN SHOP format. I selected two premium brands: BIBA and VAN HEUSEN for displaying their brand identity through forms and finishes developed through use of Stainless Steel 430. I also conceptualized a kiosk created with Stainless Steel 430. All design directions were executed with software ‘Solid works’ and ‘Adobe Indesign’.
The whole process revealed the contribution of design and the role of the designer in conceptualizing solutions that are sensitive to time, market and production considerations. My experience has been a wonderful journey comprising immense learning, new experiences and rich insights. |
