The objective of my project was to offer a brighter living for million households in rural India by improving their living standard, enhancing their lifestyle and helping them create a better livelihood as specified by my sponsor. Godrej was interested in leveraging these insights and opportunities into productive business investments. Godrej has initiated ‘new market distruption’ with the launch of its new product ‘Chotu Kool’, a cooling and preserving device.
The design deliverables were intended to be a basket of low cost, green products and services based on contextual understanding of rural India. The research process included a triangulation of ethnographic research, Zaltman Metaphor Elicitation technique and body-storming techniques.
The concepts I proposed included a solar UV Light mosquito killer; renting solar lamps/batteries where a village entrepreneur can sell hours of brightness in the dark and finally, cooling sheets. The sheet when soaked in water for 30 minutes, and dried, will stay cool for up to five days. It is perfect for cooling the contents of lunch boxes, vegetables, leftover food etc.
In addition, I designed a business model named ‘Kalpavriksha’ to be an instrument to connect learning and earning. It provides villagers and companies the convenience and comfort of locating and applying for available jobs through an organized channel. It encourages new businesses, skill enhancement and career counseling.
It's so great to have a job where one acquires practical skills and make a meaningful contribution at the same time. I had such a wonderful experience, being totally submerged in the village way of life. |
