The sense of responsibility and dedication required in the healing professions has always inspired me. Through my project, I blended my interests in healthcare and product design.
The project I undertook for them involved designing a set of homecare furniture including a motorized adjustable bed and its accessories which would fit into Indian bedrooms of upper middle class society in urban areas.
One focused user group was bedridden patients who can use specialized equipment but the applications of the concept could also extend to lavish users who could afford this product in the future. The current beds in the market are financially prohibitive owing to their costs and also aesthetically not appealing.
The project scope began with research of the existing market. I conducted interviews with doctors, caregivers and patients. After which, I conducted in-depth site research and consulted with the marketing department, generated the concept design, a mock-up model to understand the forum and mechanism.
Finally after user-feedback, I created a prototype that involved the furniture with accessories such as concealed urine bottle holders, remote controls for adjustment and display panels. The motorized bed will help reduce the manual work of the caregiver. It was an interesting experience to participate in the interactions between designers and marketing managers and I learned how to navigate relationships and create synergies. With the increase of Medical Tourism in India, hospitals can develop executive suites with a home-like décor for affluent patients.
The collection of intellectual resources with other designers from the design studio was an extremely dynamic experience. |
