My project deals with the understanding of the material Corian and its possible applications for bathroom furniture. My objective was to design bathroom furniture with optimum functionality. It had to have logical placement of storage space as well as incorporate aesthetics using Dupont Corian. Current product innovation in bathroom space is limited to ceramic, stone and glass.
My design process included brainstorming sessions, a review of the history of bathrooms, various floor plans of bathrooms in India and case studies of the furniture business. I conducted user studies from various cities in India to understand user needs and bathroom usage patterns. Next came market probing in Delhi, Gurgaon and NOIDA.
I also mapped existing manufacturing gaps, inadequate space planning issues, safety issues, ergonomic issues and affordability. After obtaining user inputs and feedback from design and marketing teams, three concepts were finalized and taken to the production phase.
The three final inspired concepts were Minimalism, Origami and Organic Architecture.
The design language I used centered on five aspects: Sleek and understated; Inspired Tranquility; Getting away from the clutter; Minimalistic and Inspired by Nature
The major highlights of my creations involved the usage of Corian as a material for wash basins, storage, shutters, drawers and wall unit cabinets, simultaneously integrating optimal aesthetics with functional needs.
The most interesting learning from the industry experience is the manner in which design concerns are integrated with marketing concerns. The opportunity to work with diverse individuals enhanced my designs through the benefit of their insights. |
