My diploma design brief was to collaborate with an architecture firm and to design and make prototypes of varied room furniture pieces and accessories that would best compliment its architecture, while retaining the studio’s aesthetic convictions and language. The project required a detailed study of the architect and its style and thereafter to design a full range of furniture and accessories based on the analysis keeping in mind a few design priorities, such as form, scale and ergonomics, cost etc. I took up the living and dining room area and designed pieces which could be used in either of the rooms.
I undertook an in-depth study of the client’s work to understand the subtle nuances of material usage, architectural elements and light quality used to create spatial experiences. Based on this study I conceptualized an idiom that complimented the client’s architecture and translated it to design furniture and accessories keeping in mind architectural compatibility, simplicity and functionality. Ten designs of sofa, centre table, bar stools, dining and lounge chairs and floor/pendant lamps were finalised and prototyped. I was exposed not only to designing and prototyping but also dealing with clients and vendors directly which was an enriching experience. The biggest challenge for me was to make the carpenters understand the designs in detail as well as getting the prototypes made. Working on this project made me more matured in design and thoughts in general. |
