Under my diploma project I designed tables and seating system for the semi-open and open areas of bungalows keeping in mind the visual aesthetics and blending of materials to serve the high-end clients. My project brief was to conceptualize and design a family of furniture for residential bungalows to be used in open and semi open areas.
In the research phase firstly the market was analyzed and then the user and their context were studied. These analytical studies revealed design direction which helped form the approach for the project. In the research special emphasis was laid on the cultural aspects of the target users. I also visited different bungalows and shops in Ahmedabad and studied them in detail including their landscape and sun-path. Based on these studies, guidelines were formed and design parameters were set before the design process moved into the next phase.
Equipped and guided with all the required parameters, design concepts were explored based on form, function, material and durability. Most of the inspirations came from the traditional Indian furniture and products to make my design more contextual. Each concept was then critically analyzed and one was selected for the next step. Product drawings were made and after studying a number of virtual models the project moved into the prototyping stage. Fabricated prototype was analyzed for the refinements if any, which were then communicated to the sponsors for further development of this project.
My diploma project helped me realize my strengths and weaknesses before entering into the professional world of design and to understand the importance of time management, communicating ideas with others and also choosing right vendors to convert those ideas into products. |
