Educational institutes these days are trying to create the best learning environment for the students and make them comfortable in the classrooms. Hence, my project brief was to design a lecture room table system for academic institutes in and around Gujarat. In my diploma project I designed a lecture room table system for the engineering and management institutes to provide the students comfort and ease. Through various combinations, my design would serve different kinds of seating arrangements depending on the room layout, available space and users’ requirements. Tables are provided with facilities for charging laptops and cable management system.
I started my work with research on the existing institutional set up both in India and abroad. A number of academic institutions in and around Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar, were visited for collecting information on the existing classrooms and lecture halls and their seating systems and the activities which happen there. Surveys among students at various institutes were carried out and several interior designers were consulted to get the feedback. Ergonomics of sitting and anthropometry of the target user groups were also taken into consideration.
After the research, I started conceptualizing the furniture system. Several concepts were developed and based on their merits and demerits, some were finalised for further explorations. The final selected concept was prototyped. I handed over the final drawings to the production team and supervised the manufacturing process. After the completion of the prototype, product testing was carried out and further refinement on the product was suggested.
The systems level approach to the project was in itself a big learning experience for me. The time management during various stages of the project was one of the main aspects that I learnt from this diploma project. |
