In my diploma project I designed and developed a set of furniture from paper which was simple in look with clean lines and close to basic geometric forms. These were also easy to replicate and could be mass produced considering the skills of the artisans working in the company and their infrastructure. The basic idea was to increase the scope of usability of paper. My diploma brief was designing furniture from waste papers. I started the project with an attempt to understand the needs of the project itself, requirements of the client along with their existing range of products. I also referred to books and research papers on the related topics and surfed internet. As an initial exercise, I started playing with paper like a child by folding it, scoring it, gluing it, and bending it, to see what happens. A series of explorations were carried out with paper to understand it and to find out the techniques which suit furniture manufacturing. Traditional paper working techniques were also studied. Thereafter I developed few concepts and the most suitable were taken forward to make mock-up models and full scale prototypes. I conceptualized furniture for an informal space like waiting area and proposed a collection of a table and four stools, a magazine holder and a lighting fixture from paper rolls, paper weave and paper coiling technique respectively. The project provided me the scope where to test my own abilities and gain enough confidence to become a professional designer. |
