In order to meet the increasing requirements of maintaining international standards and keeping the environment lively so that children can learn and play, furniture manufacturers are coming up with a variety of options in school furniture. Therefore, in my diploma project I designed some comfortable, cheerful, innovative, easy to manufacture and economical school furniture. The project brief was to create a range of school furniture which would be attractive, easy to manufacture while considering the limitations of material and technology available.
The intensive research carried out for about two months included data collection on school furniture across the globe, current trends and history of school furniture and its evolution with changing time, ergonomics and market study. Current education system, syllabus, teaching methodology and their effect on the architecture and school furniture were also studied. Five premier schools in Bangalore and Mysore were studied in detail. All these studies gave directions to develop initial concepts.
Many concepts were generated in the form of sketches and models. Several designs were explored with due consideration to stacking ability, ease of packaging and transportation. Out of these, few concepts were selected by the company to be developed further into full scale prototypes. The project focused on developing and detailing one product in the form of prototype. During the process of prototyping some refinements were made and the final product was sent for user testing. Design refinements were added based on the user feedback. Thus, a set of innovative bench and table with the facility of storing school bags was developed.
It has been a great learning experience to me. I learnt to manage, communicate and deal with various people - users, client and the manufacturers through this project. |
