The objective of my project was to blend design interventions with information and communication technology to improve health service delivery in rural and remote areas of India with a focus on maternity health services. My core focus was to set up a system to collect data about pregnancies and immunization coverage. I also conceptualized the service aspect of the system so that its implementation is independent of government machinery.
The design process started by defining the intention broadly. I made a field visit to Kutch to investigate ground level issues. The scope was subsequently narrowed down. I then conducted secondary research on both rural health and similar initiatives implemented in the past. The analysis helped isolate intrinsic connections in the data.
An in-depth analysis using a design tool called ‘Design Factors’ identified design opportunities and design guidelines which were then used to generate many concepts exploring the use of technology and available human resources in rural healthcare. A few of these concepts were detailed out.
The final chosen concept is a mobile application for the communication needs of illiterate health field workers by using a series of questions that could be easily understood through visuals and illustrations. It went through detailed design and prototyping and met with success during user testing.
In addition to acquiring new design skills, other learning from this experience comprises the ability to engage stakeholders, a new interest in typography, illustrations and visual communication.
I am glad that I could use my design education to make a difference in the villages of India. |
