The Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur planned to celebrate their Golden Jubilee event on a grand scale from August 2009 to December 2010. To this end, the institution wanted a diverse and detailed information portal.
For my project, I designed precisely this portal. This portal attempts to draw faculties, students and researchers, scientists, alumni and other interested people to this ecosystem providing all the necessary information, news, events, pictures, videos details and plans of the event. My design aspiration was to create the portal to have everything one needs to know about the event in one consolidated place, just a click away.
I also developed a web tool to create and manage a large number of conferences easily so that individuals can create their own conference web pages without knowledge of html.
The backbone of the portal is the conference web which is a one-of-a-kind tool to manage conferences more effectively. Moreover, I this framework can be applied to any other similar problem. My framework is independent and can be used for various purposes. Users don't have to code anything. The input to the framework is plain text and a few mouse clicks gives the output as is a well-organized web page.
I had to target a very diverse user group and satisfying all of them was a superb exercise in consensus-building. I realized that my designs have to be aligned with the client’s needs. In the real world, there is always a trade-off between design and functionality. |
