My classmate C. Troy Vasanth and I jointly created a short animation film titled ‘Suprabhat’ (Good Morning).
The story is about a slum tenant who sets out to do his morning ablutions in the common toilet (Sarvajanik Shaunchalay) and a series of unfortunate events that presents a barrier. He finds a solution. However, his solution seeds another problem for a different group of people. The humorous film depicts the problems caused by urban growth such as lack of space and infrastructure, sanitation problems, pollution, overpopulation and their inter-relationship with each other.
As part of our research, we captured and recorded a lot of images and sounds in the slum areas of Mumbai. We also referred to several animation and live action films for visual reference, treatment and sound.
Troy and I had the experience of the same slum space but with different perspectives. Initially, we worked on the concept individually. Then we combined our inputs to create the story, storyboarding and character design. In the production and post production stage. I worked on backgrounds, textures, character animation and editing. Troy worked on 3D modeling and animation, compositing, music and sound design.
We have experimented with the combination of classical animation and 3D computer generated animation for a unique look.
Working on this film allowed me to learn about and experiment with 3D software medium. Working in a team introduced me to a completely new step-by-step work flow method. As a whole, my project has broadened my horizons as a film-maker. |
