My film has its origins in my deep desire to create something that would reflect the time and space I belong to, my Bengali origin, as well as the larger world which I am a part of. I decided to adapt a Bengali song “The Seven Storied Building”.
The seven storied building is a microcosm of the whole world. It is viewed through the eyes of a little girl, the central protagonist, who is increasingly inquisitive about the world she lives in. In her dreams, she travels across all seven floors through a virtual elevator. The building is inside a huge tree. This is revealed at the end of the film. A diversity of people live together. They fight amongst themselves, cry in times of distress and celebrate in their own way. The last floor resembles heaven. To sum up, the seven storied house represents what the world is about with good and bad aspects. Both of them are equally necessary to strike a perfect balance.
The target audience for this film is primarily children and the educated, young, middle class.
Although the script, the thoughts and ideas were mine, this project played itself out as a collaborative effort of several professional musicians, art critics, film makers and 3D technicians. I consciously encouraged this meeting and merging of talented minds. Consequently, everyone who worked on it felt a sense of ownership. The fact that my film showcases the expression and talent of several individuals makes me shine with pride. |
