My film ‘The Deluge’ captures the look of Mumbai, Bandra on 26th July, 2005, marked by floods. For those who survived, it was remembered as a day when miracles also took place when the people of Mumbai bonded together as one big family and help stranded strangers survive. My story is a combination of documentary and fiction film making. It features two school boys who get carried away playing in the floods when their school closes down because of incessant rains. The water reaches their neck level. All of a sudden a giant ship emerges to rescue them and reach them home safely.
Hayao Miyazaki’s films have inspired me. In my film, I have tried to incorporate the meditative feeling of being one with his surroundings, the warmth between the characters and the feeling that the adventure is larger than life itself. My father sailed frequently and this led to an early fascination with dockyards and ships. Initially, I had created a comic book. I then decided to animate it on encouragement from friends and family. I found delight in animating the character’s whacky expressions in each frame.
Through this process, I learned that I would love to continue with film medium as a genre of story-telling for children by merging reality with fantasy. I am pleased that my film serves as a contribution to preserve the dying art of traditional animation films as the entire industry trend is turning into 3D, maybe even 4D in the near future. |
