The exhibition industry is dominated primarily by skilled and semi-skilled crafts-persons, working with the traditional methods of wood-working and surface finishing. My sponsor wanted to develop an exhibition display that can provide immense flexibility to the designer and the exhibitor, through a professionalized approach, while streamlining the processes of installation and of the exhibition stand.
My project focused on taking an extensive and objective look at business exhibitions (temporary exhibition scenario) in India and abroad, and then designing and developing a ‘display system for temporary exhibitions’ such that the exhibition stand thus created would conform to international trends in exhibition and trade fairs. Extensive market surveys and brainstorming sessions led to the development of a system that comprises both available and designed products. Aluminum extrusions available in the market were used to create the structure of the exhibition stand. I also developed accessories that facilitated wall cladding in various materials, small and large product displays, graphic displays, lighting, branding and signage . Another design deliverable was shelf brackets that allow the fixing of shelves in various orientations. The display system is also a “green solution” involving the use of existing resources, recyclable materials and multi-use components. Since each accessory is independent from the other, changes in one do not necessitate a change in the other – thus allowing the system to “grow” over a period.
This project gave me an invaluable understanding that good design, green methods and a contemporary approach can renew the face of the exhibition industry and make our exhibitions more powerful attractions of growth. |
