My diploma project dealt with using graphic design as a narrative tool. The context was Vasundhara Sarovar, a five-star resort which was to be opened soon near Vayalar in Kerala. Hotels and resorts are not just destinations in themselves, but a means of experience too. These spaces should give a sense of the cultural context in which they exist by adding value to themselves and their environment. My objective was to create illustrated artworks about different aspects of Kerala’s culture. These artworks were to be placed along certain parts of the resort and in the guest rooms. Laying the groundwork meant I had to first understand the larger concepts like destination branding, spatial narratives, national identity and of course Kerala itself. What began as a purely illustration project eventually came to include working with merchandise, F&B identities, interior spaces and print collateral with varied applications-print, fabric, stone- all with a strong focus on illustration and the narrative. The target group for my project was guests staying at Vasundhara resort. Design inputs in a resort encompass many other aspects of its functioning. The scope of graphic design for this project extended well beyond the areas I worked on. A design project is also rarely an individual endeavour; so I worked with landscape designers, interior designers, architect, textile designers and manufacturers. Even though I had not been involved in every creative activity of Vasundhara Sarovar, the project helped me understand that my role as a communication designer is always there as a part of the larger picture. |
