For my project, I conducted an in-depth user research study in the area of consumer preferences resulting in Colour Material Pattern (CMP) options for Samsung Home Appliances for 2010. CMP in the home appliance decision is the regional culture stamp on a global product that makes it competitive in the specific regional market. Therefore, it is an important aspect of the overall design of the product.
As part of a team, I worked to conduct consumer research focused on the Indian consumer in the middle class income segment to derive design guidelines and drivers. My study was a comprehensive design research study that incorporated market research, user studies and trend research followed. I also participated in an SDD (Samsung Design Delhi) Workshop titled ‘Indian trends for year 2010-2011 from the perspective of experienced Indian designers.’ The final outcomes of this workshop, were final trends with colour, pattern and material references. A second NID workshop titled ‘Indian trends for the year 2010-2011 from the perspective of Indian Youth’. Here, I participated in creating mood boards to visualize trends and collate materials from different cultural backgrounds as it plays a very important role in local trend visualization and validation.
My project gave me a chance to understand design research process, its flow and importance in design as well as in business. Working with a multinational company made me realize the importance of validating and representing each insight with context. The key learning came from blending Korean and Indian cross-cultural perspectives into the design process. |
