There are many indigenous tribes residing in various regions of India who are recognized as the scheduled tribes in Indian constitution. These tribes have their own culture and tradition. They even follow a religion and religious beliefs distinct from the mainstream religions. While, the Indian constitution recognizes them as a distinct cultural group, it does not recognize their religion as a distinct religion. Furthermore, constant efforts by various Hindutva forces and Christian missionaries to either assimilate or convert as many tribals into mainstream religion is having a devastating effect on their indigenous culture, heritage and religion.
For my project, I designed a film targeted towards tribals in Jharkand to foster awareness in them of the prevalent assimilation and conversion efforts. I expect that this film will have a deep impact among the Adivasis for its depiction of Adivasi culture and religion through various mediums and instill in them a sense of pride and identity relating to Adi-dharma, their own religion. In addition, it will play a major role in popularizing and promoting these issues among the mainstream sections of society.
My key learning is how to identify unique aspects of a region (plants, trees, creatures, human characters and geographical features) and then use them in animation to depict the region so that they resonate with what the Adivasis are acquainted and familiar with.
I am delighted that I could actively contribute to an important social cause related to empowerment of indigenous tribes of India and foster the importance of their unique identity and ‘voice’ within today’s socio-political scenario. |
